Prep 1 and Prep 2

Children generally join Prep 1 between 2 ½ - 3 years of age and move up to Prep 2 between 3 ½ - 4 years.

Our children leave Prep 2 to attend mainstream school when they are between 4 – 5 years of age. Their leaving age depends on their date of birth (ie those born in late summer will have just turned 4 years old, whereas September born children will be almost 5) since all schools have just one intake a year, in September.

Generally we have only a couple of places to offer new children joining us in Preps. Demand for these few places is high, so parents still need to put their child's name down while they are pregnant, despite the start date being almost 3 years away.

Prep 1 and Prep 2 are separate, structured classes with full time, qualified teachers and nursery nurses. Adult / child ratios are high. There is a teacher and four nursery nurses in Prep 1 and a teacher and three nursery nurses in Prep 2. Children are required to wear Oakfield uniform in both classes.

The planning and assessment of children’s learning is based around the Foundation Stage Curriculum, for which we have gained an ‘Outstanding’ from OFSTED.

When their child moves up to the Preps classes, parents are invited into the nursery for a ‘Preps Evening’ where an explanation is given about the Early Years Curriculum – what, why and how we teach 3 – 5 year olds, as well as an introduction to our language and literacy programme.

All three and four year olds are eligible for the Nursery Education Grant.
